Tryout Information and Minimum Requirements for Elite Aquatics Swim Team

Who can join the Elite Aquatics Swim Team?

Any children between the ages of 5 and 18 who have some swimming experience is welcome to tryout. If your child passes the tryout, we will make a placement to the appropriate level if capacity allows.

What can I expect during the tryout?

Our team tryouts are based upon the age of the swimmer and their swimming abilities. Tryout will help the coaches determine your child’s swimming ability. Upon completion a recommendation will be provided to the parent as to whether the child is ready to join our competitive swim team, or if he/she needs swim lessons prior to joining the team. Swimmers who pass this entry level tryout will be invited to join our entry level group.

The following list provides the minimum requirements that our coaches are looking for from a swimmer who wishes to join our team:

Bronze: Swimmers have to swim freestyle and backstroke for 50 (2 laps) with little or no break on the wall (25y). In addition, swimmers need to recognize swimming terms and understand their meaning.

Silver: This is an advanced beginner level group and the swimmer will be expected to know all four major strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) legally. They will also be expected to know flip, and open turns. Children who can demonstrate these abilities during a tryout practice will be invited to join this group.

Gold: In this intermediate/advanced group, the swimmer will be expected to know all for major strokes legally (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle). In addition, swimmers need to know how to do a racing dive and swim 200 yards IM (8 laps) without stopping.

What are practice hours?

Practice schedule will be discussed once the level of the swimmer is determined.  We also may conduct morning practices during the summer and double practices during the winter break. After the tryout our swim coach will be able to give you exact times that your child will practice.

Where do I go to tryout?

Tryouts are held at YMCA of Olathe, 21400 W 153rd St, Olathe, KS 66061

How should I be prepared for a tryout?

Girls need to wear a 1-piece swim suit, and boys can wear either jammer or Speedo styled suits.  Bring goggles and a towel. Please have a latex, silicone, or spandex swim cap if you have long hair.

When can I have a tryout?

Tryouts for the 2020 season will be held on March 14th at Elite from 1-3 PM. We will have some other dates throughout the summer, which will be announced later.
